Solar Sailing at NHEBSC: Partial Solar Eclipse

For your North Herts East Beds Sailing Club event:

• ⛵ Race start: 19:00 BST
• Maximum eclipse: 19:12 BST, just 12 minutes after the start, making for a spectacular backdrop as the fleet is on the water.
• The eclipse continues until 20:05, with sunset later in the evening, providing excellent photo opportunities.

Here are the key points:

• Type: Deep partial solar eclipse (the total eclipse is visible from parts of Iceland and northern Spain, but not the UK).
• Location: Hitchin/Letchworth/Luton area will all experience virtually the same view.
•  Starts: 18:16 BST
•  Maximum eclipse: 19:12 BST
•  Ends: 20:05 BST
• ☀️ Sun covered: Around 91% of the Sun’s visible area (about 92.4% of its diameter).
• Sun position: Low in the west to west-northwest sky, so choose a viewing spot with a clear western horizon.
• ️ What you’ll notice:
* Daylight becomes noticeably dimmer.
* A slight drop in temperature.
* Crescent-shaped shadows beneath leafy trees.
* It will not become dark like night because a small crescent of the Sun remains extremely bright.
• ️ Safety: Use ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses or a properly filtered solar telescope/binoculars. Never look directly at the Sun without suitable protection during any part of this partial eclipse.
