How to keep sailing over the autumn and winter if you’re new to sailing

Got the sailing bug over the summer? Wondering if it’s possible to keep sailing at the Blue Lagoon in the colder months?

What to wear to keep sailing as it gets colder

Social sailing ends in October but racing takes place all year round on Sunday mornings. As it gets colder we recommend wet and dry suits. In the coldest months you will need a wetsuit of at least 5mm. Wetsuit boots also take the edge off the cold.

Perhaps you want to give winter sailing a go before investing in a drysuit. Or for youngsters who are growing it isn’t viable to pay for drysuits yet. If this is you or your child, then wear a waterproof over a wetsuit to keep out the wind. As it gets colder, wear a fleece and wind-cheater over a wetsuit with a hat and gloves.

Ready to buy a dry suit? We suggest DAM DrySuits who will make them to measure locally in Bedfordshire.

What opportunities are there for sailing in the colder months?

If you’re new to racing and sailing you can put out a message on the WhatsApp Who’s Sailing Group, asking to crew with someone experienced (and who can help to keep you dry). It’s a great way to learn both racing and sailing technique and also to meet other members.

Don’t be put off trying because you think you will be in the way- this adds an extra challenge for the experienced racers. As social sailing ends for the season, it would be great for novices to try racing this autumn before it gets cold.

Outside of racing, you could also message the WhatsApp Who’s Sailing Group to ask who’s sailing, giving times, to see if any other members will be sailing.

Please remember safety first: stay warm, dry and sail with experienced members.
